Many believe Josh Beckett is the ace of Boston’s staff, but his reported pursuit of a hole in one has some in Boston Red Sox Nation up in arms. Boston hosts the Cleveland Indians on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series and Beckett will make his first start since April 29. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine announced May 2 that Beckett would miss Saturday’s start against Baltimore with a strained lat, one day before Beckett was spotted playing golf, according to 98.5 The Sports Hub radio station in Boston. The Indians counter with Derek Lowe, who won the 2004 World Series with the Red Sox in the last of his seven seasons in Boston.

The Indians had won six of their last seven games before losing the final two of their four-game series against the White Sox. After recovering from an awful start and fighting back to .500 at 11-11, the Red Sox have lost seven of eight following their 4-3 loss at Kansas City on Wednesday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Derek Lowe (4-1, 2.39 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Josh Beckett (2-3, 4.45)

Lowe has made one start against his former team, a 3-0 setback while pitching for Atlanta on June 20, 2009 at Fenway Park. He has allowed three runs in 19 2/3 innings over his last three starts, including two when he received a no-decision in a 5-2 loss to Texas on Saturday in his last outing. Adrian Gonzalez is 7-for-23 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs against Lowe.

Beckett allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 4-1 loss at Chicago in his last start and has alternated losses and wins in his five outings. He has allowed only two homers in his last four starts after yielding five in his first outing. Beckett is 4-5 with a 4.84 ERA in 10 starts against Cleveland. Current Indians are hitting .270 against him. Travis Hafner is 7-for-20 with a homer, six RBIs and four walks.

1. Lowe won all three postseason series-clinching games in 2004 for the Red Sox, including Game 4 of the World Series when he shut out St. Louis for seven innings in Boston’s 3-0 victory.

2. Indians third baseman Jack Hannahan is expected to play after missing Wednesday’s game. Hannahan injured his left groin Tuesday.

3. The Red Sox are mourning the death of Fenway Park public address announcer Carl Beane, 59, who was killed in a one-car crash in Massachusetts on Wednesday.
